What a good free donation plugin should include

A reliable free donation plugin should let you create a customizable donation form, accept at least one common payment method, store donation records in your WordPress admin area and send confirmation emails to donors.

These are not advanced features. They are the minimum a nonprofit or association needs to run a basic donation workflow. If a free plugin does not include donor management or email confirmation, you will likely end up patching that gap with other tools or doing it manually.

Payment methods available for free

Most free donation plugins support PayPal, which is familiar to donors and relatively straightforward to configure. Bank transfer is another option that some free plugins include, useful for supporters who prefer traditional payment methods or for larger contributions where donors want a paper trail.

Both approaches are valid. The important thing is that you can place the form near the campaign story, suggested amounts and trust signals, rather than being forced into a layout that does not match your page design.

Security features matter even on free plans

Donation forms collect personal information and trigger payment processes. The free version of a plugin should still include basic anti-spam protection, such as a honeypot field or reCAPTCHA integration, to reduce fake submissions.

Also check that the plugin follows standard WordPress security practices: nonce verification, data sanitization and proper use of WordPress APIs. If a plugin is hosted on WordPress.org, it has been reviewed against a set of security requirements, which gives you a basic level of confidence.

Donor management inside WordPress

A free plugin that keeps donor records inside your WordPress admin area is far more useful than one that only forwards donors to an external payment page with no local record. You should be able to view donation history, check payment status and find individual donors without leaving WordPress.

This becomes important when a donor contacts your organization to ask about their payment, or when you need to provide a summary of donations for accounting or board reporting purposes.
