Bank Transfer Donations on WordPress: When They Make Sense
Online payments are convenient, but bank transfer donations still matter for many nonprofits. Some donors prefer them, some organizations need them and some larger gifts are easier to manage through a traditional transfer.
Why offer bank transfer donations
Bank transfer is familiar in many countries and can be useful for donors who do not want to use PayPal or card payments. It can also be preferred for larger donations, institutional support or local community fundraising.
Offering bank transfer alongside online payment methods gives donors more choice without necessarily adding complexity.
Make the instructions very clear
The main challenge with bank transfer is that the payment is not completed instantly inside the donation form. Donors need to know exactly what to do after submitting the form.
Provide the bank account details, payment reference, expected processing time and any information your organization needs to identify the donation.
Use a pending status
Because bank transfers are completed outside the website, it is useful to record the donation as pending until the payment is confirmed. This helps your team distinguish promised donations from received funds.
Once the transfer arrives, the donation record can be updated internally. This keeps the donor history more accurate.
Send a confirmation email with next steps
After the donor chooses bank transfer, send an email that repeats the payment instructions. This is important because the donor may close the thank you page before completing the transfer.
The email should include the amount, organization name, bank details and payment reference if needed.
Use bank transfer for accessibility and flexibility
Not every supporter is comfortable with online gateways. Bank transfer can make donations possible for people who prefer direct banking or who cannot use the payment methods available on your site.
